Can I Remove Yelp Reviews?

September 20, 2016

Reputation management for doctors is key to filling your waiting room. Today we live in a world where everyone has the world at his or her fingertips. So when it comes to your practice you want your reputation to be the best that it can be, and what people have to say about it can greatly impact your future patients.

Review sites have become the modern day word of mouth and a great source of research for prospective patients. Yelp is one of the most trusted sites on the Internet and is typically on page one whenever you search for a local business or medical practice on Google. Patients are relying on online reviews more than ever, so it's important that your reputation on Yelp and other review sites is strong.

Review sites, such as Yelp, are great platforms for patients to tell the world what a great practice you have. However, it is inevitable that the day will come when you get a negative review. So, what happens when you receive a bad review? Can you remove a bad review on Yelp?

Yelp believes in allowing its users to stand behind their review and speak freely, and will only remove a review if it violates their content guidelines. So, to answer the question, YES, Yelp will only remove a comment that they feel is inappropriate.

Yelp does not allow threats, harassment, lewdness, hate speech, and other displays of bigotry. Anything that you feel violates any of these guidelines can be removed from your profile.

How do you report a Yelp review?

You can attempt to remove a Yelp review that you feel is in violation of the guidelines by reporting it to Yelp. To report a negative review that is in violation you need to confirm the Yelp business page is claimed and you are the owner. You will need your Yelp log in credentials to fully access the page. Once you are logged into your profile you will be able to report the review and Yelp will then send a message to the registered email for the account to confirm.

The Yelp moderators will then evaluate the content that you have reported. It could take up to several days, and once a decision has been made, they will notify you of their decision. It is important to note that if Yelp does remove the review, they will also notify the reviewer that their content has been removed.

What can you do to manage your bad reviews?

If Yelp decides that the review is not in violation, it is advised to take a proactive approach and address the review so it is visible to the reviewer and the public.

Here are some tips for dealing with negative reviews:

  • Learn from the review – negative reviews are a good insight to learn about areas where your patients feel your practice is lacking
  • Respond privately – by responding privately to an unhappy patient, it shows the patient that the practice values them and is sympathetic to their opinion
  • Respond publicly, if necessary – it can be beneficial for others to see a doctor respond to negative feedback and take accountability in hope to avoid the problem in the future.

It is important that patients feel like their opinion is appreciated and understood. Reputation management for doctors is all about showing that the good reviews far outweigh the bad.

A proactive measure you can take is to consistently ask your patients to write a review after their appointment. The more reviews you have on Yelp and other review sites, the more accurate the representation of your practice is.
